Welcome to Your Iceland Road Trip! 🇮🇸

Before you dive into the formal legal lease provisions below, we like to share our simple Golden Rule for exploring Iceland in a camper:

"Please treat this vehicle exactly as if it were your very own."

When you own a car, you naturally protect it. We want you to enjoy your journey safely, which is why we ask you to drive responsibly, stay slow, and imagine you are navigating with a full glass of water resting in your cupholder. If you drive smoothly enough not to spill a drop, you are driving perfectly for Iceland's terrain!

All we ask is that the vehicle is returned to us in the same basic condition you received it, accounting for normal, expected wear and tear from a great vacation. Looking after your camper ensures a seamless check-out and protects your travel budget.

Demystifying CDW: How Our Insurance Packages Work

A CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) isn’t traditional insurance—it is a formal agreement where we waive our legal right to charge you for the full cost of accidental vehicle damage, capping your maximum out-of-pocket financial liability at a set Euro (€) amount (your self-risk deductible).

An Insider Note on Our SUPER Coverage:
Standard corporate underwriting agencies do not offer a true "0 €" self-risk tier for specialized motorhomes. Because we believe our travelers deserve total peace of mind on the road, Camper Iceland self-insures the SUPER tier completely at our own corporate risk.

Just like standard commercial insurance structures, this system functions as a community pool: the collection of premium contributions from our many careful travelers directly funds the structural repair costs for the select few who experience unforeseen accidental damage. By selecting a premium protection package, you join this mutual safety net, removing unexpected financial liabilities so you can focus entirely on the beauty of Iceland.

Accidents & Responsibility: Who Pays for What?

Navigating insurance can be confusing, especially in an unfamiliar country. To make things completely transparent, here is exactly how fault and damage costs are handled if you are involved in an incident with another vehicle:

Scenario 1: You are at fault in an accident with another car

  • The Other Car: Our mandatory Third-Party Liability insurance covers the damage you caused to the other person's vehicle (subject to a baseline €250 self-risk fee per incident).
  • Your Camper: The damage to your rental unit is covered by your Kasko (CDW) package. You will only pay up to the maximum deductible of your chosen tier (€3200, €2400, €1800, or €0).

Scenario 2: Another driver hits your camper

  • The Settlement: The other driver’s mandatory third-party liability insurance is legally responsible for covering the repair costs of our camper.

Scenario 3: Shared Fault (The Insurance Assessment)

  • Sometimes, independent insurance adjusters evaluate an accident and determine that both drivers share a percentage of the fault (e.g., a 50/50 split).
  • Please understand that these allocations are determined by official, independent legal adjusters based on Icelandic traffic laws. Camper Iceland is bound by their final percentage rulings, and we cannot alter these fault allocations without entering into formal, costly legal proceedings. Your final balance will reflect the exact percentage allocation decided by the underwriters.

The lessee shall notify the lessor as soon as possible if the odometer is out of order or stops functioning during the term of the lease. Odometers in miles will be calculated to km on return (1 mile = 1.6 km). The lessee shall ensure what type of odometer is installed in the vehicle (kilometres or miles).

Should the lessee fail to return or damage an extra, it will be charged in accordance with the lessor's price list directly to the authorized payment card.

8. Returning the Vehicle

Online Check-In Step F: Vehicle Return & Mandatory Cleaning

8.1 Drop-Off Framework & Office Hours

The vehicle is returned at our station at the same place it was picked up. The drop off takes 20-30 minutes. In case of any issues it may take longer. If the renter chooses to drop-off the vehicle outside the opening hours (incl. easy drop off) or if he leaves before the rental company checks the vehicle, the renter does so at his own risk and remains responsible for the condition of the vehicle until a staff-member of the rental company has examined it.

8.2 Damaged Vehicle Evaluation Scheduling

If the vehicle has a damage the lessee must inform the lessor and the drop off time must be rescheduled to a workday (Monday til Friday, 10:00-16:00) for a technical damage inspection. If a damaged vehicle is returned outside these hours, the full self-risk deductible amount will be held on your card until a professional evaluation can be completed.

8.3 Mandatory Cleaning Standards & Refueling

By checking-in, the lessee fully acknowledges the following clear return obligations:

  • A. Accessories State: All provided accessories (including tires and tools) must be returned in the same condition as stated on the vehicle condition report (VCR), except for normal wear due to use.
  • B. General Cleaning Fee: The vehicle must be clean both outside and inside, otherwise a 300€ Cleaning Fee applies. All trash must be removed and surfaces wiped down.
  • C. Personal Belongings: Ensure all personal items are completely removed before the inspection begins.
  • D. Toilet Cassette Sanitation: The vehicle must be returned with a clean toilet and released waste, otherwise a 300€ Toilet Cleaning Fee applies. If both the general cleaning and toilet conditions are not met, a combined total of 600€ in Cleaning Fees will apply. You may choose to rectify the cleaning deficiencies yourself on the spot prior to official drop-off if time permits.
  • E. Full Fuel Tank Policy: The vehicle must be returned with a full fuel tank. Missing fuel will be charged as an empty tank, regardless of the current level upon arrival.

Complaints and claims the lessor knew of at the time of the lease period must be submitted at latest during vehicle drop off. The lessee is responsible for an appointment with the lessor to settle all cases.

9. Reservations, Modifications & Rebooking

Online Check-In Step G: Rental Agreement General Provisions

Our vehicles can be booked on our webpage or by contacting our sales team. Our system allows you to add extras at any time by accessing it online. Additions and amendments to the conditions and provisions of this lease agreement shall be made in writing.

9.1 Vehicle Categories & Model Substitutions

All bookings are guaranteed by Vehicle Category (e.g., 4x4 Camper, Medium Motorhome, Large Motorhome) and not by specific vehicle make, model, layout configuration, or structural design. Camper Iceland reserves the right to substitute vehicles with alternative models within a similar or higher-tier category layout configuration in the event of unexpected fleet adjustments, global logistics changes, safety recalls, or counter dispatch constraints.

The lessor will make every effort to provide the customer with the model requested. The lessor reserves the right to substitute models of similar or higher grade. Should a model of lower grade be offered and accepted, liability will be limited to refund of price differential between model paid for and model taken.

10. Extension of Rental

Extending a rental contract in progress is dependent on vehicle availability and requires formal approval from the station service counter. If the lessee does not return the automobile at the time agreed upon in this lease, or does not declare his intention to extend the lease, the lessor or the police are authorised to repossess the vehicle without further notice and at the lessee's cost. Extending the lease is dependent on the consent of the lessor. If the lessee returns the vehicle later after the lease has expired, a rental fee or after hour fee applies.

11. Early Returns Policy

No refunds will be made for early returns, late pickups, or unused miles (kilometres), unused propane, unused extras or other unused items. Vehicles returned before the scheduled expiration date are not eligible for partial refunds or credits for unused operational days.

12. Cancellations

Until 50 days before beginning of rental 20% with a minimum of € 200. Between 49 to 15 days before 50%. Less than 15 days before or no show 100% of rental price.

13. No-Show Policies

Failure to collect the camper within the designated window without notification results in reservation cancellation and a forfeiture rate of 100% of the booking value.

14. Fuel & Cleaning Fees

Vehicles must be returned clean and with a full tank of fuel. Missing fuel at drop-off will be charged as an empty tank. No warranties are made concerning fuel mileage and fuel tank capacity, and we assume no liability for fuel consumption rates. All gasoline and all propane refuelling during the trip are at the customer's expense. The usage of the wrong fuel or pouring fuel into the water system will cause a severe damage and will be charged in full.

15. Credit Card & Infractions Policy

Online Check-In Step a: Credit Card Authorisation

No rentals can take place without the main driver having a major credit card present. The card must be valid until at least one month after the vehicle return is scheduled. Pre-paid cards will not be accepted. By electronically signing, the hirer authorizes the company to place a temporary authorization hold (reserve) on the credit card matching the chosen insurance package, understanding that these funds will be blocked by the bank during the rental period.

The lessee explicitly authorizes the company to charge the credit card on file for any and all costs incurred during or resulting from the rental period. The lessee is liable for all parking meter charges, tunnel fees and fines for breaking traffic laws. Fines will be charged to the given credit card including an administration fee of 25€ without notice. These charges will be processed automatically and without further prior notification.

16. Security Deposits & Vehicle Recoveries

A standard insurance authorization pre-hold is placed on the driver’s main credit card at vehicle hand-over. This hold is finalized and dropped upon safe return without damages. The lessee agrees to pay the lessor, upon request a deposit amounting to the estimated cost of hiring the car.

The lessee is responsible for any and all expenses incurred by the lessor if he has to bring the vehicle back to his premises, in the event that it has been left somewhere without supervision, without regard to the condition of the vehicle, the roads, or the weather.

17. Age Requirements

Minimum age requirements vary based on the vehicle classification and scale. Detailed thresholds are managed across categories during checkout verification.

18. Driver's Licenses

Renters must present a valid national driver's license held for at least one year. International driving permits are required if the license does not use the Latin alphabet. The lessee is responsible that the drivers license is valid and sufficient for the vehicle category.

19. Malfunctions & Tires

Online Check-In Step D: Technical Support & Mandatory Return Policy

19.1 Lessee Maintenance Obligations

All the malfunctions that appear on the road after full car deliverance are considered Customer's responsibility. Tires are always the renter's liability. If tires go flat the renter is responsible for replacing the tire with same pattern and size at the nearest tire garage. The lessee is responsible for checking engine oil, fluids, and coolant levels at each refuelling, as well as reporting mechanical failures immediately. The lessee may be held responsible for mechanical damage due to negligence in vehicle operation or failure to provide normal maintenance. No reimbursement will be paid if the Lessor exchanges parts, oil, wiper blades or any other parts or fluids without the prior consent of the Lessee.

19.2 Complex Motorhome Systems vs. Vehicle Malfunctions

Due to the technical complexity of motorhome systems (heating, water, electrical, and gas), all diagnostic and repair work must be performed by specialized technicians at our primary garage: Klettatröð 15, 262 Keflavík (Ásbrú). If the vehicle malfunctions, the lessor will decide whether the vehicle should be repaired or if the lessee shall be supplied with a comparable vehicle as soon as possible. The lessor pays no damages for neither accommodation nor other reasons.

Equipment failures are explicitly not considered vehicle malfunctions. No warranty, reimbursement or any other compensation will be granted for a failing sound system (radio, cd, dvd, mp3), air conditioning, refrigerator, microwave oven, hot or cold water system, water tanks, cruise control, heating system, leaking windows/hatches, batteries or any other RV, Camper and Motor Home related functionality. The lessor shall instruct the lessee how to fix the issue; if there is no success or workaround, the lessee agrees to drive back to the lessors garage at own expense. Demanding on-site technician dispatches or towing assistance for an operational vehicle that remains safe to drive is a breach of agreement, and all associated labor, travel, and retrieval costs will be charged directly to the credit card.

20. Accidents & Incident Reporting

In the event of a collision or accident, the lessee shall immediately notify the appropriate police authorities as well as the lessor of the incident, and the lessee may not leave the scene before the police has arrived. If the lessee has fraudulently neglected the obligation to report circumstances that may be important for the lessor to assess its risk and an insurance event has occurred, the lessor shall not be held liable. In the event that the lessee has otherwise neglected the obligation to report information to such a degree that such failure cannot be considered insignificant, the lessors liability shall be cancelled in whole or in part.

21. Roadside Assistance

Station staff provide dispatch support details for field technical issues. Charges apply for non-mechanical or user-caused service dispatches, and the rental station is authorized to charge travel time and fuel costs directly to the payment card on file.

22. Driving Restrictions

The lessee shall respect all protected areas and never leave the official roads with the exception of the terms of this agreement. Neglect leads to immediate termination of the rental agreement, all waiver(s)/ insurances and any compensation for the lost rental days. Driving on roads marked F on official maps as well as 35 (Kjölur), 550 (Kaldidalur), 939 (Öxi), 520 (Dragafell) is restricted unless operating an approved 4x4 configuration vehicle.

23-30. Prohibited Uses & Fees

Off-road driving is completely illegal in Iceland. 31. Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) & Alterations

With every rental the customer receives a Vehicle Condition Report on which all damages are marked. Photos of the vehicle are taken during the pick up procedure with customer's presence and uploaded to a shared drive. The Lessee shall not alter, add or improve the Equipment without the Lessor’s prior written consent. The Lessee shall pay for all alterations, additions, or improvements to the Equipment all of which shall become the property of the Lessor. The lessee is not authorised to have repairs done or to put the vehicle up as any kind of security, without the prior written consent of the lessor.

Online Check-In Step C: Insurance & Kilometer (KM) Options

The Kilometer Charge (kílómetragjald) is a mandatory tax established by the Icelandic Government (Act no. 121/2024).
