⛽ Lower Fuel Costs Across the Country
Historically, the funding for Icelandic road upkeep was built directly into high fuel taxes hidden at the pump. The Icelandic government has permanently restructured this model by removing those embedded taxes.
As a result, gasoline and diesel prices across all domestic fuel networks have dropped significantly (saving travelers approximately 80–100 ISK per liter at check-out). Instead, all vehicles contribute to road maintenance based on the actual kilometers driven.
How It Is Handled At Return
This charge is a mandatory government tariff collected strictly on behalf of the state Treasury. Camper Iceland does not profit from this fee; it is structured for maximum compliance transparency:
- ✓ Odometer Verification: Your vehicle's exact mileage matrix is logged precisely at pick-up and again at vehicle drop-off.
- ✓ Exact Government Rates: You only pay for the exact distance driven, calculated precisely against the state's vehicle weight categories.
- ✓ Standard Admin Surcharge: A one-time 1,500 ISK infrastructure administrative fee is processed to cover mandated data reporting, digital filing, and verification.
