When does the interior open? Nature, not man, decides the dates for the Icelandic Highlands. As of late March, we are monitoring snow melt and soil moisture to predict the 2026 opening of routes like Askja (F88) and Landmannalaugar (F208).

🚧 Nature is the Gatekeeper
Every year, the Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) monitors the Highland tracks. Roads only open when the snow has melted and the ground has dried enough to support the weight of a vehicle without damaging the fragile ecosystem.
Current Status (March 23, 2026): All Highland F-Roads remain CLOSED (Impassable). Driving on these roads now is strictly illegal and dangerous, as the mud is deep and the ecosystems are highly vulnerable.
📅 What to Expect for 2026
Based on the current snowpack, we anticipate a standard opening window. Here are the historical averages we use to help you plan your Tyr or Thor expedition:
- F208 (Landmannalaugar): Usually opens between June 10th – June 20th.
- F88 (To Askja): Usually opens between June 15th – June 25th.
- F26 (Sprengisandur): Usually opens in late June or early July.
🚐 Preparing Your Expedition
If you have booked a Tyr 4×4 or Thor 4×4 for June, have a “Plan B” ready. If the spring is cold, the Highlands may stay closed until July.
Our Promise: If your intended Highland route is closed during your rental, our team will sit down with you at the rental station to map out an “Honest Route” alternative that provides the same level of adventure in accessible areas.
