Experts from the Institute of Earth Sciences flew Isavia’s plane over the earthquakes at Fagradalsfjall tonight in order to locate the eruption sites.

An announcement from the institute states that the eruption fissure is 0.5-1 kilometers long. It has previously been estimated to be 500 to 700 meters long.

The good news

Similar to the eruption at Fimmvörðuháls

The fissure is oriented southwest-northeast, just like the magma chamber that scientists had calculated to be below the surface. The lava flows down into Geldingadalur and accumulates there, says the agency’s announcement.

“The eruption is rather small, similar to the eruption at Fimmvörðuháls exactly 11 years ago.”
